Storylines, Openings and Binary
During the lesson we watched a variety of different film openingst, from films such as Ferris Bueller,10 thing i hate about you, Princess Day and Romeo and Juliet.
10 things i hate about you is about a new boy start a new school ,he first meets the school counsellor and then shown around my a student. There were a variety of binary oppositions created using a variety of technical areas. For example popular vs unpopular ,old vs young , rich vs poor, beautiful vs ugly and angry and agressive vs calm and happy. The use of sound in the beginning of the scene is used in order to show the difference in wealth and attitude, the teens in the shiny convertable are happily dancing to some pop music, whereas the girl in the battered old car is listening to punk rock and her face is angry. Moreover the use of mise en scene at this point is also used in order to capture the binary opposition between the two types of girls, the one in the old car has dark make-up and clothers on;the others all are wearing bright clothing.
Mise en scene also helps show the binary opposition of young and old ,for example when the teacher first meets the student there is a clear contrast in the way she dresses so old fashioned and the boys casual dress sense.
Another film which we looked at is Romeo and Juliet, the opening is about two different families who have hate each other and are in a fight at a petrol station. There are many Binary oppositions created such as Brave vs Scared,Latin American vs White, Religious vs Non Religious. The use of mise en scene is also used heavily within the opening of the Romeo and Juliet opening, the Capulet's wearing more sophisticated clothes and cowboy boots, it gives the impression they are more serious. On the other hand the Capulet's are wear more scruffy casual clothes which give the impression they are more immature.Within the clip the binary opposition of the two families are also further shown through the use of music, when the Capulet's are being shown the music like young faced paced ,however when the Montague's are shown there is slow cowboy music. The difference in the camera angles is also a technique highlights the binary opposition, there angles which are used to present the Capulet's like cowboy's,like when they step out the car there is a close up to the cowboy boot;where as the Montague boys have more normal camera angles.

Reflection Post - Jasmine
What has been achieved so far?
So far I have successfully created a welcome post, embedded my preliminary film from Vimeo and conducted interviews for our audience task in early December.
What still needs to be done at this stage?
I still need to post my analysis of 3 teen movies with different audiences for the second part of the audience task. I have already wrote this up on paper so I just need to transfer the information onto Blogger. I am also still yet to post my intepretation of how binary oppositions are established in teen film openings, I'm aiming to complete this by next week.
Today we were set a task where we were to watch the teen film "The Bling Ring" and write up an analysis. With my notes already prepared I will also aim to complete this by next week.
What should be completed in the next few weeks?
. Audience task 2
. Binary oppositions in teen film openings
. Write up The Bling Ring
. Watch a teen movie that contrasts The Bling Ring and write about its conventions

Stereotypes in Teen movies
My example of a stereotype in a teen movie was the cool guy
In teen movies a popular guy is athletic, good looking, cool, and tall.
Sun glasses was used to show us that he's fashionable and cool.
He's is also a bully and he just hangs around with cool people.

Understanding Binary Oppositions
This post will give a brief account of what binary oppositions are and how they come into effect in teen movies.
Positive and negative connotations evoke how a word is understood. Binary oppositions demonstrate controversy and/or conflicting ideas in media and literature features. For example, 'hero vs coward', 'pretty vs ugly' and 'poor vs rich.' In teen movies this is usually exposed through mise-en-scene and sound. A classic example of this comes from the film "Freedom Writers."
The binary opposition present in this film are 'poor vs rich,' 'hero vs coward' and 'calm vs angry.' This is depicted through each actors' costume, props, gestures/movement as well as diagetic and non diagetic sound.

Binary oppositions in movies
10 things i hate about you
Some of the binary oppositions were Popular vs Unpopular, Old vs Young and Rich vs poor.
A girl had a old rusty car whereas a group of girls had new shiny cars. Mise en scene is being used to show us that one is poor and the other is more wealthy. Also the wealthy girls listened to pop music whereas the other girl was listening to rock. This also shows us that sound is being used to separate both groups and show us that they're different.
Mise en scene is also being used to separate old and young. We can see that binary opposition is being used as we can see that the teacher is wearing smartly dressed and the student is wearing causual dull clothes
storylines,openings+binary opposition
10 things i hate about you:
- this opening was about a new student starting hight school, meeting new poeple and being shown around by the smartly dressed guy, he was shown different groups in school.
- popular vs unpopular - this shows when the unpopular (geek) trys to talk to the sporty and popular students and how they react.
- rich vs poor- this is shown through two different cars one more up to date nice convertable and the other a old rusty car.
beautiful vs ugly

Genre and Sub genre
Teen films are mainly created which the target audience of Teens in mind, this is why in majority of teen films the plot will be centred around the Teens likes and dislikes. The most popular plot examples being, bullying, coming of age, parents, love, being different, anxiety or feeling excited about an event. Some Teen films will comply with gender stereotypes in order to get a particular audience to watch the film, such as a film which is heavy based on sports will often cause more males to watch it;one with high school dramas is more likely to appeal to females. This has allowed sub genres to be created within the Teen genre.
Teen Film Sub Genres include:
Horror
Thriller
Comedy
Fantasy
Drama
Adventure
Romance
Sci-fi
Mystery
Some often use a combination of the above to broaden the target audience and make it appeal to both genders equally.
Harry Potter is combination of the teen sub genres Fantasy,Mystery and Adventure. The setting is similar to vast majority of teen movies in a school, although it is a school of magic. It goes against the normal stereotypes of teens at school , i believe this is important in helping the film to have a wider audience;this could be the reason Harry Potter is renowned among people of all ages.

Teen Movie Audience
What is a Teen Movie?
Teen movies are movies which are often aimed at a Teenage audience, majority of the time they tend to have young people acting in them, this gives them an advantage over other films because its audience will find it easier to relate if the actors are of the same age.The teen movies which are most popular are often set in the stereotypical 'American Highschool',this is done in order to capture the audiences attention and allow them to relate to the situations which are taking place because a vast amount of a teenagers life is spent in school. The popular themes within teen movies are love, relationships, friendships, conflict and parents.Popular genres in Teen Movies include Horror,Thriller and Comedies.
Who watches teen movies?
Teen Movies are aimed at teens and early 20s because they are more open to new things and are up to date with the current technology, social trends and relationship dynamics. This means they can employ new ideas and take more risks in teen movies because teen movies can often be heavily influence by sex, teenagers coming of age and taking on new responibility.Older audiences may also decide to watch Teen movies for a sense of nostalgia, because it will entertain them to be reminded of there youth.
Why do we watch Teen movies?
Teen movies are often watched because they are known for moving with the times an being up to date with social trends which makes it widely entertain for all young people, those who are not old enough to watch them often cannot wait until they become a teenager to begin to watch them;along with Teenagers who will flock to the cinema to watch the latest teen flick.Teenagers and older audience are more likely to watch a film which relates to their life in some way, therefore it is common for filmmakers to use enviroments or situations which are widely relatable, for example 'High schools' which nearly everyone has to experience one in their life. The subject of the film is also another factor which determines why we watch teen movies because the characters and storylines need to be believerable otherwise, the film will struggle to bring in an audience.

Audience Research 2
Mean Girls
The first teen movie which i have chosen to analyse is Mean Girls, this is a comedy released in June 2004.Its main target target audience is females between the ages of 12-16.This is because the film mainly focuses on a females perspective of high school life.Being based in a high school setting helps its target audience of young females to be able to easily relate to the everyday trials and tribulations of the characters, e.g. Boys, popularity and friendships. The one of the main characters in the film is Lindsay Lohan who was a popular teen actor around the time of the films release, her being in this film would help boost its popularity due to the fact that her fans would watch the film solely because she is staring in it.

Kick Ass
Another teen movie i have chosen is Kick Ass an action comedy based on the comics 'Kick Ass'.The film released in March 2010 also has a high school setting, but is more focused on the 'Geeks' of the school who are interested in comic books and superheroes. The target audience is teenage boys between 15-19,this is because a large majority of boys whilst growing up were interested in superheroes. The films also has alot of m=bad language which makes in inappropriate for younger teens. .The comics which the film is based on would have also had its own fans who would have gone to watch the film to see how the comics have evolved in to a motion picture. The main character Dave Lizewski is a stereotypical geek in high school which has never grown out the superhero phase along with his two friends.

The Hunger games
The final film which i will analyse is The Hunger Games the target audience for this film is teens from 13-19 because it capture many of the elements which relate to a modern young person. The film released in 2012, fits in to three genres adventure, sci fi ,although it features romance which the teens can relate to.The main character also has to leave home this could also relate to the older teens who may watch this film who may be separated from family. The younger teens will enjoy the action packed elements of the film which make them feel excited whilst watching.

Film opening sequences
What happens at the start of a Film?
At the Start of a film there is normal an opening sequence this will normally fit the theme of the film, for example a Horror/Thriller may have red text(symbolise blood) for the credits and a dark back ground which some slow sinister music.Whereas a children or family orientated film may have blue skies white text(like clouds) for the credits with some upbeat music which would form a soundbridge into the film. However this is not all films and some like go against normal conventions and may show clips from the film in between or during credits. Most teen films based in the High school setting generally have very upbeat music with credits which may reveal the setting of the films showing skyline ,beaches or shots of the school.
