Traivon's interesting sounds

The following clips i have chosen because they have elements which we could work with when we make our opening.

1.The first sound which i have found, has elements which you would normally find within teen films of the following sub-genres teen comedy and teen romance, it is really upbeat and preppy. The setting of the opening would generally have a school, bedroom or on a journey home. The non-diagetic music would  be played with bright colors on the screen, which would link to the jolly vibe of the opening.

2.The next sound would be more in a teen-horror/thriller,the sounds would played when the titles are being shown and slowly fade in as the initial shot is brought in.The music has a very dark and sinister feel to it,which would put the audience on edge from the very beginning. The slowing and the speeding up of the beat would also keep them glued to the screen.

3.The last would be included in a teen-fantasy,teen-adventure or a teen film with a very minimal feel.
What i particularly liked about this sound was that it starts very low and slow and builds up adding more and more sounds to it making it more interesting. It also gives it a wider variety of shots which would match the style of the sound,we could either having a party type scene where the non-diagetic sound forms a sound bridge with the diagetic sound within the party, or we could have a very simple opening with very abstract photography as the title sequence is shown.

Sound

Soundscape- collection of variety of sounds which come together to form a layer of sound
E.g.
- Foley Sounds (pre-recorded)
-Voiceover music

First we watch a one minute clip of the opening to Submarine(2010) without any sound. Then we discussed how watching with no sound effects our viewing of the clip. Some of the things which we said was it lacked emotion and it didn't capture our attention. Then we were introduced to the website Creative Commons, which is a website where you can search for Copyright free music on a variety of websites(soundcloud and jamedo). After that we were given the task to watch the Submarine opening clip again within our groups and look on creative commons for music which we thought would fit the mood of the submarine clip.It is important to use copyright free sound, because if you do not have rights to the sounds which you are using you could be sued for breach of copy rights.Copy righted sounds require users to pay royalty fees ranging from £50+,which is often not available small level production.

Creative commons allow people to search for copyright free sounds, by doing the following the following process.

First you type in the type of sounds you are looking for and click which website you would like it to search from.
We used soundcloud and searched through clips under the search 'Airy'

When we came across clip we thought was the most fitting we clicked the download button below the sound

Then we converted the file into one which we would be able to use within final cut pro.

Once in final cut pro we edited the clips to the video and added effects such as fades.

Effect of our sound scape
Once we added the sounds to our clip, it made me want to watch it because the initial sounds are  really captivating.Even the text which comes upon the screen revealing the different companies involved in the film production have music to accompany them;which could make them more intrigued to read.Within our clip we also included some foley sounds(rain drops),these come in at the right moment when the boy is looking out of the gloomy window. The solemn sound of the piano playing also gives the last shots of the gloomy town more emotion because it looks like a slow and dreary place. Our choice to have very airy sounds was also due to our perception of not much going on within the first minute of the sequence, so we decided our sound should be very minimal. If we had more time then we would have chopped the sounds more, so we didn't have sounds whilst the list of companies involved in the film were shown. When the text flashes between the shots of the bedroom we could have different sounds in between.

The Breakfast Club Green Screen

The Green Screen Edit
We decided to use the green whilst filming of The Breakfast Club, this was because of our limited budget which meant it would have been cheaper to use the green screen and edit the characters into the car in final cut.At the time we underestimated the time and effort which it would take to actually edit the clip if we used the green screen. So i think if we did decide to use a screen within our teen movie we would, time manage ourselves better in order to spend more time on the editing stage.
We watched a variety of clips like this one which helped us on the different steps we needed to take in order to do the green screen edit. Some initial problems we has was the clip used a different version of final cut so, we had to search for clearer videos.

Despite our best efforts to get all the car shots inside a car we did not have enough time and did not figure out quick enough. The first few times we attempted the green screen it did not look realistic. Then we changed the chip we were going to use. Then we had to black out the background using the ... tool ,so we could insert the image of the car.We found a picture of a cars interiors ,which suited each characters stereotype or which was similar to the one in the film opening. Once we got the interior imported into final cut,we zoomed it out so it fit perfectly behind our actors. After  we did this we added a background behind the car to make it look like we were outside the school, just like in the opening of the film.

This is the short shot we did manage to get green screened into the car.

The Breakfast club Character and costume

When we recorded our shot by shot remake of the Breakfast we tried to include all the characters and get costumes as similar we could.

The Characters

The Jock was played by Arber he wore nike tracksuit, and a baseball jacket. This was to make him look as close as possible to the character in the breakfast club.

The Princess was played by Nathaly wore dark jeans and a green top with short sleeves, which would give the impression the t-shirt is expensive. The reason we could not match the characters clothing exactly is we had a last minute wardrobe malfunction
What was worn by The princess
What we wanted to be worn

What we wanted to be worn

The Criminal character wore a black leather jacket, dark t-shirt and dark jeans. We thought it was important for the chracter to wear dark colors because we could not find a long coats like the one which is wore by the princess in The breakfast club.

Editing The Breakfast Club

Editing The Breakfast Club was a tougher process than I entailed. It took in total a little over 2 hours to complete but I am happy that the remainder of my team were content with the end product as this was my first time. Whilst editing, I was able to experiment with the several special effects on Final Cut Pro e.g. dissolve and fade. From this I discovered the importance of control so did not make the mistake of smothering our remake clip with lots of different effects - although this was tempting.

What I found difficult
Merging all the different film clips together to achieve one fluent movie was what I found most challenging. Due to a lack of knowledge of all the tools available on Final Cut, many times I had accidentally deleted clips, disrupted the audio lines, overlapping became an issue at one stage and this was extremely time consuming.

What I did comfortably
Organising the clips in the correct order to match the original Breakfast Club movie was what I found fairly easy.

How I can improve my editing skills
More opportunities for practice and a wider knowledge of the tools available on Final Cut Pro. I believe these two factors in addition to what I already know would enhance my editing skills dramatically.

Filming of the Breakfast Club Filming

This week we filmed our Shot by Shot remake of the Breakfast club.During this process we found there were things that did not go as well as planned and others which went well.

We begun our recording on mondays lesson, we recorded the shot by shot remake in the order of our storyboard.Whilst filming our remake we had still shots of things such as the clock, canteen, and student work board during this we didn't manage to get to film at a time when the college was quiet so they shots often had a lot of background noise. The changing room shot and the car shots were particularly hard to shoot, because we were only on the college site and we didn't have any car to record in.Perhaps if we had more money we could have hired cars which would have been identical to the ones in the film opening. However we decided to use the green screen in order film the shots in the car and edit the characters into a car in final cut.Throughout the week we constantly referred to our storyboard and the clip of the  opening of The Breakfast Club to help us whilst filming our remake. Some shots like of the hallway and the auditorium, were messed us during our filming process;this was due to us pressing a button which made the camera really dark.

When we started our filming some of our actors didn't show up which lead to us having to improvise, using classmates and friends to fill in for them.Another problem which we came across was we struggled to find some of the costumes which we needed for the characters, so we had to use other costumes which we thought fit the stereotype of the characters.
This is what the Dad actually wore
The Dad wore a shirt because we couldn't find what he actually wore in the film

Remake of the Breakfast Club (plan)

Remake of the Breakfast Club (plan)

The Breakfast Club is a teen comedy drama movie made on the 15th of February 1985 by John Hughes. The task is to remake the movie shot by shot on City and Islington six form grounds using all the types of camera shots and angles used at the opening of The Breakfast Club.

Before making the shot by shot of The Breakfast club we are going to find some actors that are going to be taking a role of a character from the teen movie and we are going to  organize and collect suitable props that suit different characters in The Breakfast Club. This includes a Baseball jacket for the Jock and old clothes for the less wealthy boy whose mother is probably a single mother as we saw that three characters were sitting at the front of the rusty car.

Some of the props we are going to use include:
  • Scarf
  • Tie
  • Baseball Jacket
  • Sunglasses
  • Lockers
  • Trophies
  • Tables
  • Chairs
  • Computers
  • Rubbish
We are also going to add a background of a car on Final Cut pro after we take a video so that it looks like the scenes from the opening of The breakfast club when the parents are dropping of the teenagers.

Travelling and Arriving

The Breakfast Club

In this lesson we watched a short clip from the breakfast club, taking notes of the different vehicles the characters traveled and arrived at the school.Within teen films you often first see the characters on their traveling and arrival to the school,it is the first chance we get to decide what type of character they are or if they follow a specific stereotype. For example jocks(4x4),cool kid(sports car),cheerleader(convertable) and geek(old banger). However The Breakfast club is set in time when perhaps less young people drove themselves to school.

Transport Methods
The Princess Car (BMW)

The Brain Car(Old banger)-Three people in the front single parent

Athlete Car(Truck 4x4)-Big and strong

Criminal Walk- Forever alone

Basket Case Car(Eccentric)- No attention
