Donnie Darko Opening Analysis: Mise en scene

In today's lesson we were given a 'Donnie Darko Blogging Task'. The task was to analyse how locations and mise-en-scene, editing, camera work and the presence of characters portrayed their school environment in relation to teen movies.

Location & Mise en scene

The audience immediately establish the genre of this movie due to the school uniform worn by almost all of the persons included in the opening shots. We observe students converse, groom themselves in locker mirrors, and at one stage, witness a student handling drugs. The movement of the actors and props combined illustrate the common features of teenage behaviour therefore compliments the socially prescribed view of the high school experience.

Locations involved in the opening sequence includes a classroom, the school corridor and the outdoor space for students. Most teen movies are set inside a school building and its surrounding terrain so the content of this movie has been established successfully.
