Mise-en-scene in the opening of Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko

In today's lesson we watched the opening of the movie 'Donnie Darko'. The task is to analyse how mise-en-scene, camera and editing is used to show and present characters in the environment that they're living in this Teen movie.

Mise-en-scene
We can see that the set in this movie is in a high school so we can straight away refer that the movie is going to be about teenagers and children as they go high school. Also the costume shows us that the movie is about teenager and children as they are wearing school uniform. The costume also separates the identity of characters as teachers wear own smart clothes and students wear uniforms.
Props used in this movie includes mirrors, books, school bags and drugs (cocaine). Props have been used to show how characters have been portrayed in this Teen movie. For example a cool guy wont carry books and school bags around but someone that is a normal student will. Another example is that the cool guy would use drugs as he doesn't care about anything.

This is an example of a girl that is lonely and that gets bullied. We can see that see is by her self and is fat . This indicates that she is a student that gets bullied as reading books is not cool and being fat is a negative factor in a teenagers eye.
This is an example of an cool guy as he is using drugs in school and doesn't really care about education.
